Just imagine cycling, walking or driving around and seeing a colourful sea of blooming flowers. Keep on reading to discover the tulip fields of Holland.
What is the Holland region?
The Netherlands is a country in the Kingdom of The Netherlands that exists out of twelve provinces. Two provinces are Noord (North)- Holland and Zuid (South)- Holland. When we go back in history, we will see that these two provinces were the most powerful region in the Dutch Republic, which is why many countries call The Netherlands wrongly Holland. The Holland region was split between Zuid- Holland and Noord- Holland in 1840; before that, it was one region that was part of the Kingdom of The Netherlands.
I hope you will enjoy this blog on seeing Holland and its tulip fields. When you see tulips in Holland, you will know the difference between The Netherlands and Holland. Of course, there’s a whole story behind the region and the split, but that is something I will tell you about another time (probably on my Youtube). I can guarantee that you will love seeing Holland and its blooming tulips.
When do tulips bloom in Holland?
People often wonder when they should visit tulip fields in Holland, and rightly so. You come here to see the Holland flower fields bloom; it would be a shame if you didn’t see any. Unfortunately, there is a lot of wrong information on the internet about when to visit tulip fields in Holland. People say you should visit at the end of March, the beginning of April or even the end of May and June. All of this is wrong.
So, when are the tulip fields in bloom in Holland? The best time to see tulips in Holland is the last week of April. They generally start blooming around the 15th of April until the first few days of May (around the 4th or so).
Remember: it is nature. The exact time depends on the winter we’ve had and the amount of sunshine and rain during the beginning of spring. I’ve only had it once in the last ten years that the tulips were so late that they were blooming on the fields until the middle of May (which is very, very, very rare and unlikely!).
So, please don’t risk it. Listen to the experts (it’s me, in case you didn’t know!) instead of people who have visited once and don’t know what factors it depends on. I want you to see the must-see flower fields in The Netherlands and have a great time instead of getting disappointed as you got the wrong information from other people. I hope you’re excited about visiting this part of The Netherlands during the tulip season.

Can I walk through flower fields in the Holland region?
Please DO NOT walk through any Dutch tulip field or other flower fields. These beautiful fields are not here for your Instagram, TikTok photo, or video. The flower industry is – like I said- an industry. And being a tulip or flower farmer is a job. If you walk in these fields of tulips in Holland, you will spread bacteria, fungi, insects and diseases from field to field. Besides, these tulip fields in Holland are all on private property. Please stay out of the bulb fields in Holland. This way, you are a respectful traveller, and we will gladly welcome you again another time to see the tulip in Holland.
Visit the tulip fields in Holland
The best places to see tulip fields in Holland are found below. Tulip fields are located all across the Dutch countryside, and here you will discover where you can see tulip fields in Holland to enjoy and experience The Netherlands’s magic during spring. Tulips and The Netherlands go hand in hand, so I completely understand that you would want to travel from your home country (or simply a different side of The Netherlands) to see these bad boys. It’s funny because usually, when you live in a specific place all your life and work in the industry, you get used to it. But I still love the tulip season in Holland every year.
The Netherlands is called ‘boring’, but if you see my blog about The Netherlands, you will know that it is anything but boring. Would you believe me when I say that many Dutch people have never seen flower fields in The Netherlands? Unfortunately, Dutch people do not tend to appreciate the beauty around them, so they often don’t go out and enjoy it either. I hope you will enjoy finding flower fields in Holland and that you will love your trip to the best places to see tulips in The Netherlands for free.
P.S. If you want to see tulip fields from Amsterdam, then this article is great for you!
1. Zuid (South)- Holland
Goeree- Overflakkee is an island that people often think is part of the province of Zeeland, but it’s actually part of Zuid- Holland. The town of Sommelsdijk was the only town on Goeree- Overflakkee that was a part of Zeeland until 1805.
This Dutch island in the southwest of The Netherlands is home to stunning towns like Goedereede and Middelharnis, as well as beautiful Dutch beaches. And, in the eastern and central part of Goeree- Overflakkee, you can actually find plenty of blooming tulip fields. The best part? Only some people visit these flower fields in Goeree- Overflakkee.
The most visited area in The Netherlands to see tulips is the Randstad region. Here you can find the largest flower garden in the world: De Keukenhof. This flower garden in the town of Lisse is open for around two months and will get more than one million visitors. Besides visiting Lisse in the Holland region for tulips, other towns where you can find flower fields are Hillegom, Noordwijk, Noordwijkerhout and its surroundings. If you’re okay with seeing tulips in the Randstad with many people simultaneously, this is a great area to visit.
2. Noord (North)- Holland
There are several ways to describe the West-Friesland area: either as a region of seven municipalities or as the historic region (which is still used to this day as an identity and such, I call myself, in the first place, a Westfries with other Dutch people in the room). Today, I’m talking about the region existing out of seven municipalities. The historic region is the entire area within the Westfriese Omringdijk, an old water barrier of more than 100 km long that encloses a region. In the area of Enkhuizen, Venhuizen, Hoorn and Medemblik, you can find plenty of stunning tulip fields. You can even go on a historic steam tram along the tulip fields.
Kop van Noord- Holland
You can find the most tulip fields in the Holland region (and the entire country) in the Kop van Noord- Holland. This stretches roughly from the city of Alkmaar to the maritime city of Den Helder and from Egmond to Callantsoog and Anna Paulowna: it is filled with flower fields during the season. This is also a great place to see tulip fields, wind turbines and canals in Holland. It’s also the region that I’m from and still live in. So, that’s why you can join me on a tulip fields bike tour this spring 2023.
One of the best tulip tours in Holland (in my humble opinion) lasts around four hours, bike rental is included, and only seven people can join daily. Don’t miss out!
The Beemster region is a Unesco World Heritage site between Purmerend and Alkmaar. This used to be filled with peat, then turned into a large inland sea, but was eventually turned into reclaimed land by wealthy tradesmen from Amsterdam. And during springtime, you can visit the Beemster for tulip fields. There is not an endless amount like in the other areas, but it’s rarely seen by big crowds, which means that it’s perfect for travelling to the Beemster (such as Middenbeemster) if you like calm surroundings.
