How to dress

When I am traveling I always want to blend in. You should try to do the same in any country, as well as The Netherlands. In general we, locals, will see the difference between tourists and our ‘own’ crowd, however you can minimize this and be less at risk. At risk of what?

The reasons for wanting to blend in with the locals are to be less of risk of being pickpocketed and to not get a side eye from locals because you offend them. For instance, if you enter a restaurant in The Netherlands in only yoga pants and a work-out t-shirt you will be getting the side eye. In a bad way. If you’re entering a cafe, this kind of clothing is still kind of off, but not as bad as in a restaurant. Simply because in The Netherlands, we generally wear work out clothing in the gym only.

I understand you want to be comfortable when you eat and travel, but you definitely can be comfortable and be dressed appropriate for the location.

That’s why on this page you will get to know how to dress in The Netherlands for several occasions and seasons. This way you will enjoy The Netherlands even more from an insiders perspective.

Of course, there’s nothing wrong with being a tourist. We all are tourists, no matter where we visit. But it can be nice to feel like you’re fitting in with the locals. Here you will discover what you can wear in Amsterdam, Holland and The Netherlands from January until December.
